Did anyone else wake up yesterday and feel like they could finally exhale?
It's always election year in Virginia, but this one was important in a different way. As Donald Trump continues to tear down our country (figuratively and literally), to ignore the needs of the citizens while he basks in opulence, the Blue wins on Tuesday give us hope. Across the nation, it was a clear rejection of Trump and his policies, which are failing everyone except the wealthiest.
Here in Virginia our efforts were rewarded! Congrats to our incoming Governor Abigail Spanberger, Lt. Governor Ghazala Hashmi, and AG Jay Jones. Democrats gained 13 seats in the VA House of Delegates, now holding 64. Locally, we're so proud of the progress that Donna Littlepage made in her campaign. Though she didn't win this election, she made huge strides in closing the gap, proving that our area isn't red- we're purple. And that means we're on our way to putting Joe out of a job, at least in Richmond.
Congrats to other area candidates- Lily Franklin in HD 41, Sam Rasoul in HD 38, and Roanoke City Sheriff Antonio Hash. And a special shout out to Ryan White, who won his race against Cheryl Facciani for Roanoke County School Board. This one may not have been on your ballot here in Salem, but what happens in our neighboring communities impacts us, and we are all better off having Ryan on their school board. And finally, thank you to all of you who knocked on doors, handed out literature, worked as an election observer, wrote postcards, donated, or talked with your neighbors. Democracy doesn't work unless we do. 💙
And as this election season winds down, remember that it's always an election year in Virginia. In 2026, we'll be voting for U.S. Senate (currently held by Mark Warner), and U.S. House District 6 (currently held by Ben Cline). So take a minute to just enjoy our incoming state leadership, and know that we'll hit the ground running in a few months.
